This hour-long edition of The Glorious Rant Show travels through dub, experimental electronica, Asian psychedelia, spoken word, punk and contemporary Vietnamese music.
Grant Riley opens with the heavy rhythmic pull of Kenny Diezel and O.B.F. with Pupajim, before moving through Klee Bho, Thailand’s Plern Vern and Through the Canal by Sounds of Future Siam. The middle section leans into European and UK dub, including Gregor Prächt, High Tone and Axel Boman with Trensum Tribe.
Joshua Idehen’s sharply observed Mum Does the Washing introduces a more lyrical turn, followed by the scrappy irreverence of Gobshite and the genre-blurring Korean collective Balming Tiger.
The closing sequence concentrates on Vietnamese artists Mess, Annsolo, Xinh Xô and Nguyễn Nhật Minh, ending with Vân-Ánh Võ’s interpretation of Erik Satie’s Gnossienne No. 3 and the atmospheric Lullaby of the Earth.
An adventurous, deliberately unpredictable selection connecting underground music from Vietnam with dub, folk, electronic and experimental sounds from further afield.
