Engraved Glass is the Bandcamp home of Yorkshire sound artist Jez Riley French.
This is music made by paying attention. Field recordings capture rain, birds, ice, buildings, machines and the low vibrations of the ground beneath us. Other works combine these sounds with composition, electronics, voices and fragments drawn from old recording archives.
Many pieces unfold slowly. They ask for headphones, patience and a willingness to listen beyond the obvious. A distant footstep, the hum inside a structure or the almost inaudible movement of an object may become the centre of the work.
The site also gathers several related imprints. Engraved Glass publishes French’s limited-edition releases, Point Engraved features other artists, while A Quiet Position brings together downloadable collections from various contributors.
Alongside the recordings are small-run CDs, photographic publications and collaborative projects. The physical objects feel closely connected to the music: carefully made, modest in number and concerned with place, memory and overlooked detail.
It is a rich archive for anyone curious about field recording, sound art and what becomes audible when we stop treating silence as empty.
